'Battle: Los Angeles' Trailer Brings War To LA, 'Space Invaders'-Style

Los Angeles will survive the alien assault in this week's "Skyline"... if only so the city can be bombarded again in next March's "Battle: Los Angeles." Thankfully, it looks like L.A. will be a bit more prepared this time around, considering "Battle" is more of a war movie, sci-fi style.

The trailer doesn't give too much of the film's plot away, but it's fairly straightforward. Aliens descend on Los Angeles, and the Marines are called in to try to stop the invasion. In this case, the Marines are Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez and Michael Peña (and thousands of others, of course -- those are just the ones we're supposed to care about). What is most notable about the trailer is that it presents the film first and foremost as a gritty war movie; badass extraterrestrials just happen to be the enemies.

If "Skyline" and "Battle: Los Angeles" seem a bit similar to you, it's not a coincidence. Colin and Greg Strause did the special effects for "Battle: LA," but when they found out their lovingly crafted aliens were going to be hidden for much of the movie, decided that they would make their own independently funded alien-invasion flick so the world could see their terrifying extraterrestrials. It isn't any big secret: they told that story at "Comic-Con."

Still, "Battle: Los Angeles" is telling a familiar story in a unique way, and I give it props for that. Also ... gotta love that interesting use of music throughout. That's what you call chill-inducing. All of a sudden, this puppy has jumped to the top of our must-see list.
